Universal

Colossians & Philemon For You
Mark Meynell:

Spot the use of “universals” in Colossians 1:

v 15 “The Son is … the firstborn over all creation.”

v 16: “For in him all things were created … all things have been created through him and for him.”

v 17: “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

v 18: “… so that in everything he might have the supremacy.”

v 19: “For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him.”

v 20: “…and through him to reconcile to himself all things.”

It’s hard to miss his point now. Paul claims a message of absolute relevance to every person in every nation in every era. This obviously includes the Colossian Christians—together with their pagan neighbours. This also includes you as you read this—together with your family, neighbours, colleagues, and even your casual acquaintances and those you just walk past on the street.

Just let that sink in for a moment.

Jesus is concerned for every aspect of every life of every creature. He is truly the Lord.

No single piece of our mental world is to be hermetically sealed off from the rest, and there is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry: ‘Mine!’
