Beauty from Ashes

Yesterday I had a long conversation with a refugee lady whose life, which is pretty hard already, has just got a whole lot worse. She's just heard that her husband is going to take a second wife. This family is so poor- they have 8 children (the youngest of whom is only two months old) and live in a shepherd's hut. Life is hard for them. She will have to move out with all the children.Today we hope to go out to their village and see what we can do to help and attempt to persuade the husband not to do this.

I've just read Isaiah 61, one of the Servant Songs- beautiful, powerful words. It was good to pray it through for Z, this friend of mine. The words are so poignant and full of hope for the thousands of refugees in this region. The good news of the Servant Messiah is their only hope in the midst of all the brokenness, grief and despair.

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
to proclaim the year of the LORD's favour
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,
and provide for those who grieve in Z-
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes,
the oil of joy
instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
Isaiah 61. 1-3
