This is a short but powerful and thought-provoking book (based on a true story) about an optician on the island of Lampedusa. One moment he had his life very much under control, but after a boat trip with his wife and friends his world turned upside down. The eight friends on their boat came across masses of drowning immigrants and managed to rescue some. It's a very moving account of what happened and how it affected their outlook on the refugee crisis as a result.
The author Emma-Jane Kirby is a BBC journalist.
